A FESTIVAL FIT FOR A QUEEN
On June 3 Battersea Park will become an immersive world of eccentric British culture, celebrating the 60 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Bringing together artists, designers, chefs and bakers, revellers will be royally entertained throughout the day. Situated on the beautiful southern bank of the Thames, Battersea Park provides the perfect vantage point to cheer on the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant of 1000 boats. Festivalgoers will also be able to kick back in deck chairs and watch live footage from the specially erected giant screens. Live music is the order of the day, with everything from 1950s swing orchestras on the bandstand through to Norman Jay’s legendary Good Times sound system - plus a host of exciting acts on the main stage. If all things folky take your fancy, there’s a full programme at the “Village Green”, alongside Home Live Art’s “Alternative Village Fete”, where an array of interactive stalls await you.
And if that’s not enough, you can rummage for a royal bargain at our Classic Carboot Sale, covet a beautiful find in Anita's Vintage Fashion Fair or Etsy's Handmade Memorabilia & Vintage Collectibles Marketplace or hand craft your own souvenir at one of our many artist-led workshops. And for thrill seekers, Carters Steam Fair will take you high in the sky, and then bring you back safely down to earth where you can revive yourself with a cuppa and a bun baked by the WI, while you watch the competition to build the tallest cake in Britain. Thirsty punters will be able to head to one of our bars including our pop up London pub, ‘The Diamond Geezer’ and stop for a sing-a-long and a right cockney knees up. Curated by Hemingway Design and Clare Patey, the festival will evoke the best of eras gone by whilst marking the glorious present and celebrating the joy of being together on a historic day and public holiday. A short video of Wayne & Clare talking about the festival festival can be found below and on YouTube. For more details about AVFF Vintage Marketplace at the festival please click here. Vintage "Poisson d'Avril" (April Fools)
Image via Tammy Tutterow Sending funny postcards on April Fools Day (the first of April) to friends and family of people holding fake fish was a French tradition in the early 20th century. The icon of the fish being used during this time is often believed that in the French Rivers there was often an abundance of fish, especially in spring as the young had just hatched. These young fish were apparently easy to fool with a hook and lure. Therefore, the term "Poisson d'Avril" or "April Fish" became widely used and it was customary to fool people on April 1st as a way of celebrating the foolish fish. There are many theories surrounding the origin of April Fool's Day, one particular being that it has strong links to the French calendar reform of the sixteenth century: In 1564 France moved their start of the year from the end of March to January 1. Those who failed to keep up with the change, and stuck with the old calendar system and continued to celebrate the New Year during the week that fell between March 25th and April 1st, had jokes played on them such as having cutout fish attached to their backs. It is still celebrated in France this way today with many people sneakily attaching paper fish to there prank victims back. Hope you have a wonderful fish fun April Fools Day. A FESTIVAL FIT FOR A QUEEN
Diamond Jubilee Festival, Battersea Park - The official Diamond Jubilee Party – 3rd June
On Sunday June 3rd 2012 the Queen celebrates her 60 year reign with one of the largest events ever held in London, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. This unique spectacle, inspired by a rich history and tradition of entertainment and theatre on the Thames, is expected to include 20,000 participants on the water, millions of spectators on the river banks and a global audience expected by the major broadcasters to many hundreds of millions. The flotilla, with the Queen at its helm, will be 7 miles long, pass under 14 bridges and take 90 minutes to pass any given point.
A festival “fit for a queen” celebrating design, music, art, film, fashion and food from the past 60 years will play a key role in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant and provide an ideal vantage point to watch the flotilla. From a portrait of The Queen made out of 3,120 cakes, to public ‘knightings’, and a knees-up featuring Pearly Kings and Queens at The Diamond Geezer Pop Up Pub, The Diamond Jubilee Festival, Battersea Park, will mark The Queen’s reign in a wonderfully eccentric, inimitable style. Curated by Hemingway Design (Vintage Festival) and Clare Patey (Feast on the Bridge), the festival will provide a truly creative day for the whole family to get involved in.
“We’ll be creating a completely immersive environment – a timelines through the 60 years of our Queen’s reign. This will be a proper knees up with dancing and plenty of activities – it’s a chance for people to put their glad rags on and polish their dancing shoes.” - Wayne Hemingway, MBE Festival-goers will get the chance to play traditional British games with a Jubilee twist, listen to historic fairy-tales, feast on cake made by London's hip new wave of Women’s Institute members and create their very own souvenirs of the day. They can also enjoy a ride on the vintage steam fair, shop in the Right Royal Department Store, watch films in the open air cinema and learn to dance 1952 style.
“The Diamond Jubilee Festival will be a celebration fit for a queen and a party which will remain in the collective public memory for many years to come. Artists, designers, film-makers, chefs and bakers have all been brought together to create a distinctive celebration for all.” - Artist and co-curator Clare Patey
The Diamond Jubilee Festival at Battersea Park is the official public party, a free celebratory event that will be the curtain-raiser for a great British summer, including the London Olympics.

Wonderful Weekend: St. Patrick’s Day & Mother's Day"I was born in Ireland and come from a large Irish family and it makes Mother’s day an important tradition for me. The fact it falls on the same weekend as St. Patrick’s Day makes it even more so. My Grandmother ran a second hand/ vintage clothing business (it’s good to know that I am like her) and my Mother is one of 12 children"
Mum on her wedding day - I still have her beautiful wedding dress which she handed down to me.
Mum and some of the family and friends. "To me being together as a family is a very important, having 3 girls & 1 boy is it always busy and never dull! The girls will be helping at the Fair on Sunday. It is really great having them at the fair - everyone loves the fact my children are helping out and they have been doing so since they were teenagers - it gives the Fair a more personal/family touch - it also helps that they all love vintage and want to come! I’m off to Twickenham on Saturday to see the England v Ireland Rugby game with my husband (who’s English) and we will both be hoping for a win.” Happy St. Patrick’s Day and wishing you wonderful Mother's Day and hope to see you at our Mother's Day Special Vintage Fashion Fair at 20th Century Theatre, Notting Hill on Sunday 18th March. London Fashion WeekendIt was great to go to London Fashion Weekend on Saturday (25th Feb) at Somerset House. Every year after London Fashion Week has been and gone and now Milan Fashion Week is in play, LFWeekend finishes the week with this extensive fashion shopping event. Here are a few snaps from our day:
Around 5 years ago Anita with AVFF introduced vintage to LFWeekend so it was great to see the vintage area expanded and curated by the talented Vintage by Hemingway design team. The Vintage Floor had a fab atmosphere with a gorgeous tea room in the centre where you could chill out and have tea and scrummy cakes by Molly Bakes.

London Fashion Week: Bernard ChandranOne half of the AVFF team was lucky enough to attend the Bernard Chandran AW 12/13 collection at London Fashion Week yesterday. There was a huge amount of anticipation and buzz in the air as the show hall at Vauxhall Fashion Scout was brimful, all with cameras, iphones and even ipads to hand ready to snap away.
The show kicked off with two models walking the runway in tandem both with oversized collars and contrasting shade of light and dark which set the tone for the show; structured and sophisticated. The collection had a sharper edge to his previous offerings and had a utility 1940's underpinning construction to the pieces which I really liked. Beautiful fabrics and contrasting textures were cleverly mixed to add interest to the feminine silhouettes. Sparkling custom-made embellishments could be found subtly on each garment from shoes, belts, collars and even the models lips (Perhaps the invite gave a tiny hint to that). Plus our favourite beauty product Lipcote was also to be found in the exclusive goodie bags.
A Beautiful and elegant collection see the video by Brighton Art below:
